Scripts

Script has become a common term applied to instruction codes used to control information processing systems. Scripts can be applied at the command line, as an interpreted instruction, for example by a browser (client-end) or remote online server (server-end) as well as compiled executable code like normal computer programs.

There is a large number of different "scripting languages". Some of these are increasingly used whereas others are in decadence.

There are two essential areas where information systems designers need to be able to exert control. These are to be able to manipulate programs and the operating system running within a server and the other is to provide all of the necessary processing to support any given application in response to user requirements.

The decision as to which scripting languages one should opt for is not straightforward but at SEEL we have opted for two scripts:

WIL - Windows Interface Language

WIL provides an ability to control and manipulate programs and MicroSoft® Windows operating systems and can be run as an interpreted script or as a compiled executable program. SEEL uses WIL to manage automation tasks within the "local" server-based management. On the other hand, WIL scripts can be run as as NT Service on remote servers. They can also be used to automate access to web sites, ftp operations and a range of other operations.

ECMAScript - the JavaScript standard

Fortunately for the Internet, the European Computer Manufacturer's Association realised that the "proprietary standards" created by competing private companies was going to atomise and perhaps even destroy the very useful scripting language, JavaScript. As a result they established what became an International Standard around which most of the important web applications have been developed.

ECMAScript is now becoming the principal script driving most important developments for Internet work. SEEL opted for ECMAScript soon after the ECMA launched its first standard. Today SEEL has an extensive ECMAScript code library exclusively for server-end operations. Server-end ECMAScript operations run up to 100 times faster than the slow client-end JavaScript operations which rely on browser interpretation. In addition, server-end operations enable the script libraries to be protected from inspection by making use of code association. This is a technique whereby scripts are only functionally coherent in memory and not in written form. To achieve this SEEL uses specialised servers.
